What is Habitus
Habitus is a term coined by French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu to describe the ingrained habits, skills, and dispositions that shape an individual's behavior and perception of the world. It is formed through socialization and is deeply influenced by an individual's social and cultural background, as well as their experiences and interactions with the world around them (Habitus – Online Lexikon für Psychologie & Pädagogik, o. D.).
Habitus is not fixed or innate but is constantly evolving through an individual's experiences and interactions within their social environment. It is also shaped by factors such as class, gender, ethnicity, and education.
According to Bourdieu, habitus plays a significant role in maintaining social hierarchies and inequalities. Individuals with similar habitus are more likely to understand and relate to each other, while those with different habitus may struggle to communicate effectively.
Understanding habitus is important in fields such as sociology, anthropology, and cultural studies, as it helps explain how individuals navigate and make sense of their social world.
Overall, habitus is a complex and dynamic concept that plays a significant role in shaping individual behavior and social structures (Märtin, 2019; Krais & Gebauer, 2017).
