π Key facts
π‘ Background
YouTube crypto analysts have a large reach (in total, >20 million subscribers) to introduce viewers to the world of cryptoassets and to support investment decisions, often by predicting raising or falling cryptocurrency prices. The methodology (e.g., technical vs. fundamental analyes), cryptocurrency coverages (e.g., Bitcoin vs. Ether), etc. differ largely among different channels.
According to the theory of efficient financial markets, one can neither use technical analysis of past price movements (weak form) nor publicly available information (semi-strong form) to infer future prices movements. However, we do not know whether crypto markets are weak- and semi-strong efficient, and if they are not, whether YouTubers manage to exploit these inefficiencies in their investment advises. The goal of this thesis will be to contribute to this intransparency and assess whether YouTube Crypto Financial Analysts are giving valuable investment advice, i.e., achieving a high prediction accuracy and outperforming a traditional buy-and-hold strategy.
π¦ΎWho We Are
The Chair for Strategy and Organization is focused on research with impact. This means we do not want to repeat old ideas and base our research solely on the research people did 10 years ago. Instead, we currently research topics that will shape the future. Topics such as Agile Organizations and Digital Disruption, Blockchain Technology, Creativity and Innovation, Digital Transformation and Business Model Innovation, Diversity, Education: Education Technology and Performance Management, HRTech, Leadership, and Teams. We are always early in noticing trends, technologies, strategies, and organizations that shape the future, which has its ups and downs.
π― Goals
The goal will be to derive investment predictions of two YouTube channels over a year and assess their accuracy. More details will be discussed in a get-to-know meeting.
