When you meet someone new, or you aren’t friends for a very long time, it is often hard to know if the person is really trustworthy and has your best interest at heart. Try looking for the following 15 signs that indicate trustworthiness (Thibodeaux, 2020):

1. They are consistent. A reliable individual consistently displays the same behavior and uses consistent language across different situations. They possess self-control, maintaining their character and following through on their commitments, even when faced with temptations to backtrack. They don't wear different facades or pretend to be someone they're not just to make an impression. Changes in their approach stem from acquiring reliable new information rather than self-serving whims. Furthermore, their words align with the information you hear from others.
2. They show compassion and humility. These characteristics indicate that the person has a genuine concern for others and doesn't view themselves as superior. By being outwardly focused, they are less inclined to step on others' toes or betray them for personal gain.
3. They respect boundaries. Trustworthy individuals refrain from imposing their will on others because they understand the importance of personal autonomy. They avoid bullying and recognize the significance of respecting others' choices and boundaries.
4. They compromise and don't expect something for nothing. Making small sacrifices demonstrates their understanding that trust is a mutual exchange.
