When is a team too big? 💬
Having big teams creates a communication overhead, something that can often be perceived in a corporate structure - where team size suddenly doesn’t correlate with team output anymore.
The ideal team size is 8 🎱
According to Josh Kaufmann, in terms of a team that is dedicated to do a specific thing up to eight team members are ideal. Although every additional team member adds capacity, the group never becomes so large that you're spending more time and energy on communication and coordination versus actually doing the work.
The one pizza meeting 🍕
Amazon's internal way of describing this trade-off is the “two-pizza” team. If you would need order two pizzas for a late business meeting, you’re too big and need to split the team into different groups.
