📚 Description of coursework
This project week is designed to bring together students from medicine, computer science, and management to jointly develop biomedical innovations, from the initial idea to the final pitch. It engages participants with an entrepreneurial mindset and equips them with the foundational knowledge needed to navigate innovation in highly regulated and clinically shaped markets.
Participants will explore what makes entrepreneurial action distinctive in the biomedical environment and learn to move from open problem exploration to a focused, viable solution. Working in interdisciplinary teams, students combine scientific, clinical, and entrepreneurial perspectives to identify unmet clinical needs and translate them into a compelling value proposition. Through impulse lectures in the mornings and hands-on venture development in the afternoons, students validate key assumptions regarding feasibility, desirability, and viability, design business models, build initial prototypes, and present their results. The interdisciplinary setup is central: management, medical, and technical students learn to understand one another's language, justify their own decisions, and convince others with well-founded arguments, creating a dynamic environment for entrepreneurial growth and innovation in healthcare.
🎯 Learning outcomes
Students who have attended this seminar will have
- A basic understanding of the specific characteristics of entrepreneurial action in the biomedical environment, including what makes innovation special in highly regulated and clinically shaped markets
- Knowledge of structured innovation approaches as a basis for future entrepreneurial tasks
- An understanding of how to perceive the unmet clinical needs of various user and stakeholder groups and integrate them into the innovation process
And have acquired skills related to
- Validating key assumptions regarding feasibility, desirability, and viability, and deriving a viable value proposition from them
- Critical thinking and reflection of their own solutions with regard to clinical relevance, feasibility, and entrepreneurial viability
- Collaborating in interdisciplinary teams, understanding the language of others, and preparing and delivering a startup pitch
📖 Teaching methods
In the course of this project week, students receive input on entrepreneurial fundamentals in the biomedical context through impulse lectures. Subsequently, the content is deepened in interdisciplinary teamwork through exercises, prototyping, reflections, presentations, and discussions.
As part of the examination, participants work in interdisciplinary teams to identify an unmet clinical need and develop a biomedical innovation in response, from the initial idea through to a business model and initial prototype. At the end of the seminar, they will have the opportunity to present and discuss their solution in front of the other students and a jury. Based on this, the students will have a solid understanding of how to apply structured innovation approaches to develop viable biomedical ventures that are clinically relevant, feasible, and entrepreneurially sound.
